Cluster-Geschäftsführer Robert Gfrerer mit Antworten auf aktuelle Fragen zur Branchenentwicklung.

Warum ist der Chips Act für Europa und die europäische Industrie wichtig?

„Weil Halbleiter die Basis bilden für etwa die Hälfte der globalen Wirtschafts-Wertschöpfung. Und weil Europa im harten Wettbewerb steht mit den USA und Asien. Europa muss seine Industrie zukunftsfit halten und seine Wertschöpfungsketten widerstandsfähig machen. Dafür bilden die geplanten Investitionen von rund 43 Milliarden Euro die Grundvoraussetzung.“

„Wir müssen mit diesen Mitteln auch die digitale und grüne Transformation hin zu einer klim- agerechten Zukunft vorantreiben. Diese Transformation durch die beiden Entwicklungstreiber Digitalisierung und Klimaschutz – auch als twin transformation bezeichnet – entfaltet erst in ihrer Kombination ihre wahre Kraft.”

Was bedeutet das europäische Chip-Gesetz für die österreichische Elektronik- und Halbleiter- industrie?

„In den nächsten zehn Jahren wird es zu einer Verdoppelung des Bedarfs an Elektronik-Chips kommen – und Europa hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, den Marktanteil daran zu verdoppeln. Es wird also eine Vervierfachung der Jobs geben und ein entsprechendes Wohlstands-Wachstum.“

„Mit der europaweiten Industrie-Integration und den dafür eingesetzten Mitteln kann auch die österreichische EBS-Industrie weiter wachsen und die Wertschöpfung sowohl bei innovativen Zu- lieferern und KMUs, den großen Chip-Herstellern ebenso wie bei den Forschungs-Organisationen gesteigert werden.“

„Halbleiter sind essenziell für viele Klimaschutz-Technologien – für die Energiewende mit Photo- voltaik und Windkraftanlagen, Elektromobilität, Energienetze. Mikrochips ermöglichen uns eine massive Steigerung der Energie-Effizienz und wir können von Österreich aus Unternehmen und Privatpersonen weltweit auf dem Weg in eine klimafitte Zukunft unterstützen.“

Wie kann der Cluster die Unternehmen dabei unterstützen, Gelder, Projekte u.ä. zu lukrieren?

„Wir verstehen uns als Ermöglicher von Innovationen und als Brückenbauer für Kooperationen. Konkret heißt das: F&E-Projekte initiieren, Förderungen organisieren und koordinieren, bei der Projektabwicklung unterstützen, europaweite Kontakte zur Verfügung stellen.“

„Mit dem neuen durch den Koralmtunnel entstehenden zweitgrößten Ballungsraum Österreichs, der Steiermark und Kärnten, erwachsen auch neue Möglichkeiten für Österreich im europäischen Kontext. Der Cluster wird diese Möglichkeiten aufzeigen und mit den Cluster-Unternehmen in reale Wertschöpfung umwandeln.“

Why is the Chips Act crucial for Europe and its industry?

“Semiconductors underpin nearly half of global economic value creation. With Europe vying against the likes of the USA and Asia, it is very important that we future-proof our industry and fortify our value chains. The proposed investments of around €43 billion are a cornerstone for this.”

“We need to leverage these resources to accelerate both digital and green transitions toward a climate-conscious future. The synergy between digital innovation and climate protection – often dubbed the ‘twin transformation’ – realizes its full potential when combined.”

What does the European Chip Law hold for Austria’s electronics and semiconductor sectors?

“Over the next decade, we anticipate a twofold increase in electronic chip demand. Europe aspires to double its stake in this market, translating to a fourfold job surge and a corresponding wealth growth.”
“The pan-European industry integration and allocated resources promise growth for the Austrian EBS sector. This will boost value creation across the board – from pioneering suppliers and SMEs to major chip producers and research entities.”

“Semiconductors play a pivotal role in numerous technology for climate-protection – spanning from the energy transition with solar panels and wind turbines to electric vehicles and power grids. Microchips are our gateway to significant energy efficiency gains. From Austria, we’re in a prime position to assist businesses and individuals globally on their path to a climate-adaptivefuture.”

How can the Cluster help firms in obtaining funds and projects?

“We pride ourselves on being innovation catalysts and collaboration facilitators. This entails kick- starting R&D initiatives, streamlining funding processes, assisting in project management, and offering an extensive network in Europe.”

“With the emergence of the Koralmtunnel, Styria and Carinthia are set to become Austria’s next major urban hub. This presents fresh opportunities for Austria within Europe. The Cluster aims to spotlight these prospects and collaborate with member companies to transform them into tangi- ble value.”
