In the context of Europe’s microelectronics industry, the industrial location Austria provides a highly sophisticated industrial profile, which also reveals major contributions in attaining European goals in the field of microelectronic and nanoelectronic components and systems.
Three integrated device manufacturers (IDMs) are headquartered in Austria, with two local production facilities. The location is enriched with leading international equipment suppliers, robust niche players in software and electronics, and a multitude of small to medium-sized research and cluster organizations. Specialized university departments further enhance the region’s appeal, complemented by dynamic user industries, particularly in the automotive, aeronautic, and rail sectors. This ecosystem supports the seamless integration of innovative microelectronic solutions into highly developed local value chains.
These enterprises collectively employ 23,000 to 30,000 individuals in Austria and 35,000 to 46,000 globally. Including the relevant value chains of the ECSEL-Austria target group, the employment figure in microelectronics, embedded systems, and smart systems integration in Austria likely ranges between 65,000 and 85,000. These companies generate a substantial sales volume exceeding 15 billion euros.

Carinthia, Austria’s southernmost federal province, brings together superior expertise, advanced technologies and an attractive mix of industries embedded in a highly innovative environment.
No other Austrian federal province brings as many innovative products and services onto the market as Styria. With a R&D rate of 4 percent, Styria has been above the EU targets for 2010 for many years and occupies a top position among all European regions. Alongside an outstanding training, research and business landscape.
On a global scale, the microelectronics industry plays an increasingly significant role. Therefore the SILICON ALPS Cluster, in alliance with Silicon Europe, replaces the former me2c – [micro] electronic cluster association at the European level.
In the context of the European microelectronics industry, Austria makes significant contributions to achieving European goals in the ESBS sector. The SILICON ALPS Cluster directly supports the Silicon Austria initiative by the bmk – the Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology – and the technology platform ESBS-Austria.
In the South of Austria region the SILICON ALPS Cluster is a fast growing network of companies, organisations and research institutions to support the regional electronic and microelectronic sector.
Our areas of excellence are what the south of Austria stands for throughout Europe. Our ecosystem goes beyond the area of microelectronics and covers the entire value chain. It can be divided into our four Areas of Excellence RFID & wireless IoT, Smart Sensor Systems, Cyber Security Systems and Power Electronics.
The SILICON ALPS Cluster has a partner ecosystem of more than 150+ partners. This ecosystem includes many corporate partners, educational and research institutions, and other cluster networks.
With our partners and in our Areas of Excellence we strive to initiate and drive forward many cooperation projects. Within our ecosystem, we have already been able to implement 33 projects and we are constantly trying to increase this number.
